and this time around, again, it looks like it's mainly going to be just rain. i'm david bernard for cbs news, miami. >>> at least six deaths are blamed on the storm system in the southeast. the trouble with tornados in hard-hit arkansas, nearly 200,000 people lost power, and the governor declared a statewide emergency. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: snow blanketed parts of the midwest and northeast. falling and blowing so hard it was difficult for road crews to keep up. as much as 2 feet of snow could fall in some areas. driving was treacherous. this car overturned in frederick, maryland. some trying to get home after christmas encountered dangerous near whiteout conditions. >> all of a sudden, we hit indiana, and we ran into this crazy snowstorm. >> reporter: well over a thousand flights have been canceled across the country and many others delayed including here at raggal international airport. >> i thought we were going to die. >> reporter:residents of mobile, alabama, heard what they thought sound like a freight train and a storm system touched down. >> we hopped into the cent

killing one of them. it happened in oakland last night. cbs 5 reporter da lin tells us police are still looking for a passenger who took off running. >> reporter: two officers pulled over a bmw for speeding. the driver stopped but once the officers got out of their car, investigators say the bmw sped away. less than a mile away the driver of the bmw broadsided a black lincoln on 98th avenue. the impact killed the passenger in the sedan a woman in her early 20s. four other people inside suffered minor to serious injuries. witnesses say they could hear it from blocks away. >> big noise, bang. >> reporter: the chp says after the crash, the bmw's driver and his passenger ran off but officers captured the driver nearby 34-year-old moore facing two charges of evading police and vehicular manslaughter. >> did not appear to be very much under the influence. he was able to exit his vehicle and flee the scene. so that would show that he is coherent. >> reporter: surveillance footage from a gas station shows the passenger sprinting across a gas station to get away from police. and tonight, they ar

is nervously watching a fast moving creek that is threatening a christmas day flood. cbs 5 reporter is in east pal alto where people spent the evening sandbagging around their homes. >> reporter: that's right. and right behind me is the levy where crews are hard at work, reeling in the truckloads of sandbags, gearing up for more rain tomorrow. while most people spend christmas eve stacking presents under the tree. some east pal alto residence spent their night sandbagging. in preparation of more rain. >> and we are just packing up the sand. >> reporter: sunday monday, they spilled over the levy, cutting the neighborhood between daphne way. >> and we were swarmed with so much water last night. you had to run out. >> reporter: they are several evacuees. >> how is this affecting your christmas? horrible. just horrible. and they sets back. >> reporter: he could not do any last-minute shopping, spending the night with his eight kids in his car. a block away, things are getting back to normal in that home as they were evacuated, thankful that their house was not damaged. >> it was like up this high

they have a long way to go. i'm grace lee, cbs 5. >>> wall street isn't putting faith in washington. the dow lost 158 points today. its five-day losing streak is the longest since july. the nasdaq and s&p 500 also closed down. >>> police pulled over a bmw for speeding. but before the officer could walk up to write the ticket, the driver floored it and tried to get away. moments later, the bmw slammed into another car a few blocks away from bishop o'dowd high school. cbs 5 reporter da lin tells us an innocent person was killed because of another's recklessness. >> reporter: it started at 98th and bancroft. two chp officers patrolling the streets of oakland pulled over a bmw for speeding. the driver initially stopped but once the officers got out of their car, investigators say the bmw sped away. less than a mile away, the chp says the driver of the silver bmw m6 broadsided a black lincoln on 98th avenue. the impact killed a passenger in the sedan. investigators say the woman was in her early 20s. four other people inside the lincoln suffered from minor to serious injuries. witnesses say the i

this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> axelrod: good evening. scott's off tonight. i'm jim axelrod. a lot of holiday plans are out the window tonight due to a powerful storm system that stranded travelers on highways and at airports. it's blamed in at least six deaths. in the south, there are reports that 41 tornadoes have touched down since yesterday. one of them sheered off the front of the trinity episcopal church in mobile, alabama. luckily, no one was injured. the same system brought a blizzard to parts of the midwest, forcing the cancellation of more than 1,400 flights. tonight, it's headed to the northeast. winter storm warnings have already been posted. troy kehoe of our cbs station in indianapolis begins our coverage. troy? >> reporter: well, jim, here in bloomington, indiana, we've already seen 11.5 inches of snow so far, and it is still coming down with blizzard conditions here in the midwest. this has been a two-day storm leaving much of the country paralyzed. blinding snow with wind gusts topping 35 miles an hour have created whiteout conditions in the p

years old and there's a big celebration designed to benefit every rider for the next 24 hours. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is in the city to give us a little history lesson and tell us what is in store for all the folks that jump on board today. cate, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, frank. it's nice that it's muni's birthday and they're offering a present to the public. we're actually at geary and market, where the first muni line started 100 years ago and it ran from here downtown all the way to 33rd avenue. now, today the transit group serves 200 million passengers a year. muni has a network of 63 bus routes, a historic light rail system, streetcars and three cable car lines. now, before muni's existence, the city's public transit involved horse-drawn buggies. to celebrate the 100th birthday all of muni services including the cable cars will be free until 5 a.m. tomorrow. originally muni was going to charge riders five-cent fares because that was the fare 100 years ago but, no, they are going to give it to you for free today, which is nice. this isn't last time they will
